RFSA WELCOMES RECOMMENDATIONS FROM KEELTY REVIEW
The NSW Rural Fire Service Association (RFSA) welcomes the recommendations from the independent review into the March 2018 Bega Valley Fire and affirms its commitment to provide the best possible support to NSW volunteer firefighters.
RFSA President Ken Middleton thanked former Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty for leading the independent inquiry into the fire services response to the Tathra fires.
“I want to thank Commissioner Keelty and affirm our support alongside the NSW Government and NSW fire agencies in remaining steadfast in working towards a common goal of protecting the communities of NSW,” Mr. Middleton said.
“The RFSA welcomes Commissioner Keelty’s conclusion that despite intense criticisms, it was difficult to suggest that any better outcome could have resulted on the day.
“What is most pleasing to hear is that the people of Tathra were found to be wholeheartedly supported by emergency services.
“Ultimately, we have been given clear direction, in supporting both the firefighting and greater NSW communites, and will take on board lessons learned as a result of the review.
“The call out centre, which our members and association have been calling for, will ensure an agnostic approach in deploying the quickest most suitable resource to an emergency.
“The commitment and courage shown by our dedicated members is commended and remains beyond question.
“They drop everything and put their own lives on hold to assist their communities during times of emergency, resulting in lives and homes saved,” said Mr. Middleton.
