RFSA Welcomes Extra Funding For Emergency Communications
The NSW Rural Fire Service Association (RFSA) has welcomed the announcement of additional funding for emergency communications.
“Good communication links are critical to not only allow our members to do their jobs well, but to keep them safe in what are often dangerous situations,” RFSA President Brian McDonough said.
“Mobile phone coverage just doesn’t exist in a lot of the areas where the RFS operates. This makes the Government Radio Network a critical lifeline for firefighters on the front line.
“Importantly, this network will allow more RFS vehicles to be equipped with Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) sooner.
“AVL shows where firefighters are in real time, and makes it possible to get them help when they need it most. It is essential for the safety of our firefighters, because we can’t help them if we don’t know where they are.
“The RSFA has been agitating for the Government Radio Network to be rolled out quicker than the government had previously planned. We are delighted that they have heeded our calls and provided extra funding to help make it happen.
“While there is still more to do, this is a great first step,” Mr McDonough said.
