The heat will be on in the kitchen at RFS State Champs
The competition is sure to reach “boiling point” this year at the RFS State Championship’s inaugural Catering competition.
The spotlight will shine on volunteer catering crews in an exclusive competition to see “whose cuisine reigns supreme”.
RFS State Championships Incident Controller Chief (or Chef) Superintendent Ken Hall said he is excited to see the introduction of the event. “We all know that emergency services, like armies, march on their stomachs so it’s fantastic to be able to showcase the skills and commitment that these members bring to the NSW RFS”
Usually working behind the scenes to provide nourishment to the competitors, marshals and helpers, this year our caterers will be competing in a cook-off lead by commercial caterers who specialise in emergency service catering.
“Win or lose, they’ll learn invaluable tips and tricks that they can take back and share with their Districts. And of course, it’s going to be a lot of fun!” said Superintendent Hall.
If you’ve ever watched a TV cooking competition you will be familiar with how it’s going to work. Two composite crews will be formed with specialist catering personnel from across the Service.
The crews will be tasked with planning, preparing and serving breakfast and lunch to the competing teams, marshals and helpers on the Saturday and Sunday of the Championship.
Each team will be supplied with a kitchen, a budget and a product order form from which to create their feasts.
Crews will be judged on menu selection, budgeting, standard and timeliness of service, food preparation and of course taste.
Half of the score will be awarded by a panel of judges and half by popular vote from the “customers” (State Champ Participants).
