RFSA welcomes increased penalty for tossers
Today the NSW Government announced that it has adopted the RFSA’s suggestion of adding demerit points to the existing fines for people who toss lit cigarettes from cars.
Already this year more than 200 people have been caught throwing lit cigarettes from their cars.
“This reckless behaviour puts the safety of our members and the community at risk, and I hope today’s announcement makes people think very carefully about the consequences of their actions,” said RFSA President Brian McDonough.
The new penalty will be five demerit points, which doubles to ten points on total fire ban days.
“This is exactly what the RFSA had suggested following discussions at our last State Council meeting and we welcome the increased penalties,” Mr McDonough said.
RFSA State Secretary Steve Robinson joined the Minister for Police and Emergency Services to make the annnouncement.
