NSW RFSA response to NSW Bushfire Inquiry Report – Funding needed to make RFS volunteers safer
The NSW Rural Fire Service Association (RFSA) has welcomed the release of the NSW Independent Bushfire Inquiry report, but warned that without a clear funding commitment, many of the Inquiry’s recommendations can’t be implemented.
“While it’s encouraging that the government says they support the Inquiry’s recommendations, this is really only the first step,” RFSA President Brian McDonough said.
“Volunteer firefighters are crucial to saving lives and protecting property right across NSW, and they deserve to be protected while they’re on the job.
“That is especially clear this year as the state recovers from the worst bushfire season in living memory.
“Recommendations like improving safety systems on tankers will go a long way to keeping volunteer firefighters safe, but it simply won’t happen without significant investment from government.
“The Premier’s announcement today is a good first step, but we need meaningful new funding if it’s going to make a difference to the safety of our members,” he said.
