Celebrating our Members on International Fire Fighters Day
On St Florian’s Day we pay tribute to our Members, the men and woman of the NSW Rural Fire Service, who raise their hand in times of emergency to help protect their local community.
Most recently, severe storms in the Sydney and Hunter region saw lives lost as well as extensive flooding and damage to property. More than 400 NSW RFS fire fighters attended over 3,500 storm and flood related incidents working alongside other emergency service agencies such as the NSW SES.
St Florian’s or International Fire Fighters Day recognises and honours the sacrifices that fire fighters make as they dedicate their lives to helping protect the community.
“I ask the people of New South Wales to take a moment today to reflect on the personal sacrifice our rural fire fighters take each and every time they respond to a call.
“Many volunteers and staff selflessly gave up time with their family over the Christmas and New Year period to assist their interstate colleagues with containing fires in Victoria and South Australia.
“Those assisting with the New South Wales storm clean-up risked their safety as they worked to repair damage caused by downed trees and powerlines.
“Over the years, some fire fighters have made the ultimate sacrifice as they worked to help our community during a time of most need.”
Along with reflection, St Florian’s Day is when current and past fire fighters are thanked for their contributions and special acts of bravery, courage and meritorious service and formally acknowledged by the Commissioner.
A special service that was held at RFS Headquarters Lidcombe was attended by Directors Allan Holley and David Hoadley and CEO Bernard Cox.
