RFSA welcomes increase in mandatory non-parole period for arsonists

Wednesday, 21 August 2019

The RFSA has welcomed today's announcement that the standard non-parole period is set to increase from five to nine years for convicted arsonists.

The Association lodged a submission in February 2019, advocating for an increase in penalties for intentionally causing fires.

RFSA President Brian McDonough said the announcement was a win for RFSA members.

“Our members put their lives on the line each and every time they pull on their ‘yellows’ and respond to a fire call.

“The thought that someone, through the deliberate lighting of a fire, would put lives at risk is reprehensible and I am hopeful that today’s announcement will encourage any would-be arsonists to think twice.

“The safety of our members is paramount and we will continue to advocate for any measures that protect them while they go about their work protecting the community.”
