RFSA congratulates Brian McKinlay for Australia Day Honour

Tuesday, 27 January 2015

The NSW Rural Fire Service Association (RFSA) congratulates the immediate past President of the Association, Brian McKinlay, for his Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division.

Brian Lindsay McKinlay, AFSM from Kurrajong, NSW was recognised for service to the community through fire and emergency services.

President of the RFSA, Tim Arnott, said Mr McKinlay was President of the Association RFSA from 2007 until 2013, a current Board Director and was the inaugural and current serving Chair of the Council of Australian Volunteer Fire Associations (CAVFA).

“Brian has had hands-on-roles as a volunteer fire fighter for more than 50 years, starting back in 1963 with the Berowra Bush Fire Brigade before becoming involved with the Hawkesbury district in 1982 and is very deserving of his award,” Mr Arnott said.

“Brian's leadership as a member of the State Executive and Board and more importantly as State President from 2007 to 2013 must be acknowledged as he has achieved above and beyond what could be reasonably expected of a person holding such positions.

“He achieved a great deal during his time as President of the RFSA for the members of the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Brian McKinlay has been there lobbying for the members of the  NSW RFS to receive better resources and facilities to fight fires and to greatly reduce the risk to fire fighters while they are on the front line.

He has also been lobbying hard to increase funding for hazard reduction work right across the state and is proud to see the increase in the amount of this work.

“Brian has also been there on the front line of fire fighting, so he knows what the 70,000 volunteers experience when controlling blazes,” Mr Arnott said.

“I know, in speaking on behalf of all of the members of the RFSA, that we are better prepared to help protect and support our local communities due to the efforts made by Brian."

The Association also extends congratulations to the seven NSW RFS members named as Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) recipients in the Australia Day Honours list.

- Superintendent Kevin Adams, MIA Zone
- Group Captain Peter Conn, Comobella Rural Fire Brigade
- Captain Harmen Kampman, Candelo Rural Fire Brigade
